Nabisunsa Shines at National Debate Championships 2021

In spite of government closing down educational institutions for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Debate Society Uganda (DSU) managed to work round this challenge and organized the National Debate Championship which took place from 26th November and the final was held at Hotel Africana on 11th December 2021. Nabisunsa Girls’ School sent three teams to the championship. These passionate debaters are:

Naila Mbarak S3

Tracy Nimusiima S3

Raima Muhammad S3

Martina Busingye S3

Martha Busingye S3

Halima Namwanje Semujju S5

Belinda Nabbumba  S5

Lucy Agaba S5

Cauthan Buluma S5

Two of the teams got through to the quarter finals and one team made it to the semi-finals. The first semi-final had Nyakasura School against Kings College Buddo and Nyakasura School emerged the winner. The second semi-final had Nabisunsa Girls School up against Muyenga High School and Nabisunsa Girls School won that round. This set Nyakasura School against Nabisunsa Girls in the heated final and Nabisunsa Girls School emerged 1st runners up. The finalist team included Martina Busingye S3, Martha Busingye S3 and Lucy Agaba S5. The team coach Joseph Tahinduka was not surprised that the team did so well and promised to lead them home with the trophy next time.

The team patron Ms Sharifa Nanyunja was proud that the young ladies had done their best. She expressed her appreciation to the Debate Club members, the coach, the headteacher Hajat Zulaika Nabukeera Kabuye, the management and staff of the school as well as the parents for their never ending support.

They also had 5 of the ten best speakers of the tournament and these were:

1st position Halima Namwanje Semujju

3rd Tracy Nimusiima

5th Martina Busingye

7th Raima Muhammad

8th Lucy Agaba

The chief guest of the day, the country director Action Aid Uganda Mr Xavier Ejoyi congratulated the schools that sent in students to participate in the tournament which discussed topics ranging from taxation and Covid-19 vaccines. He emphasized that debating is a very vital tool in building the students’ capacity and capability of becoming future leaders as it exposes them to critical thinking.
